Docs/WING Extension
Names, colours and SEL
The desk and the rack show the same thing: names, colours and icons come from the desk, and SEL on the desk picks the channel in Shadow Rack.
With the WING Extension the desk and the rack show the same thing. A strip you put on the rack arrives in Shadow Rack with the desk's name, colour and icon, and if you change one of them in Shadow Rack, the desk changes too. SEL on the desk picks the channel in the app. You label things once, wherever you happen to be standing.
- 1Name, colour and icon as on the desk
- 2The desk strip and the USB channels it uses
- 3ICON and COLOUR: changes go to the desk too
From the desk#
Every rack channel linked to a desk strip takes:
- the name from the desk's scribble strip;
- the colour - one of the WING's 18 strip colours;
- the icon - the WING's own icon, drawn as a Shadow Rack line icon.
They keep following the desk: rename a channel on the WING and the rack channel follows within seconds. If a desk channel takes its name from its source (the WING's link between channel and source name), Shadow Rack shows the source's name, like the desk does.
The channel's input line shows where it lives on the desk, for example CH 13 USB 13 in the CHANNEL view: the desk strip, then the USB channel it comes in on. With the WING, interface channels are called USB 1, USB 2 ... like on the desk.
From Shadow Rack to the desk#
Rename a linked channel, give it another colour or another icon in Shadow Rack (see channels), and the same change goes to the desk:
- names are cut to the desk's 16 characters;
- a colour is moved to the nearest WING colour;
- a channel linked to its source on the desk changes the source's name, colour and icon, so the desk shows it everywhere;
- the strip's USB return on the desk gets the same name, colour and icon, so the desk's routing screen tells you what comes back from the Mac;
- ⌘Z undoes it on both.
When the desk isn't connected, the changes wait and are sent when it's back.
In Rack IEM the same works from the in-ear pages: renaming a desk channel there renames it on the desk (Rack IEM on a WING).
Icons#
The icon menu lists No icon and then the WING's own categories, each icon drawn: General, Vocals & mics, Drums & percussion, Strings & winds, Keys, Speakers, Specials. The numbers are the desk's, so an icon picked in Shadow Rack is the same icon on the WING.
A channel without an icon gets one guessed from its name (Kick In, Komp, Gtr Amp - Polish and English, desk abbreviations included). A channel linked to the desk shows the desk's icon instead. Drum icons also name a group's New York bus Drums NY.
SEL on the desk#
Press SEL on a WING strip that's on the rack and Shadow Rack picks that channel: the CHANNEL view shows it, the mixer highlights it, and the custom controls work on it. That's the quickest way to get a plugin on the desk's knobs - SEL the strip, then turn.
- A strip that isn't on the rack is ignored; Shadow Rack stays where it was.
- Channels, auxes, buses, mains and matrices all work.
- The SEL state the desk has when Shadow Rack connects is only noted, not acted on - starting Shadow Rack doesn't jump you to some channel.
Desk mute and New York#
A New York copy belongs to its channel. Mute a desk channel on the WING and Shadow Rack silences its New York sound with a 10 ms fade - the whole bus for a single-channel bus like Vox NY, or only that channel's part of a group bus like Drums NY. Unmute it and the copy comes back. Muting the New York channel itself doesn't mute the channels that feed it.
On the WING the New York channel is also in the same DCA and mute groups as the channel it comes from (New York on the desk).
Desk meters#
Shadow Rack also reads meters from the desk: the four mains and the 16 FX slots. They're used by the speaker limiter - the main's level as it leaves the desk and how much the limiter takes off. The meters on the rack's channels show what Shadow Rack itself gets and sends, not the desk's.
