New York on the desk
With a WING, a New York bus gets its own fader on the desk, in the USER 1 layer - you make the bus in Shadow Rack and mix it on the desk.
Without the WING, a New York bus plays on free outputs of your interface and you bring it up on your console yourself. With the WING Extension Shadow Rack does the console part too: the squashed copy comes back on its own WING channel, next to the channel it belongs to, routed the same way and put on a fader layer. You make the bus in Shadow Rack, then you mix it on the desk.
Making one#
Make the New York bus as usual in Shadow Rack - from the channel's New York card (NEW YORK BUS) or the mixer's NEW YORK (see New York). The card says where it will go: New York compression: a squashed copy of this channel on its own fader on the Wing, right next to it.
Shadow Rack then:
- Puts the members on the rack first, if they still play direct - one after another. The New York sound has to come from what the rack gets. (The card says New York compression on its own fader next to CH 13. It goes through the rack first.)
- Picks a free desk channel - one with no source and no name: the channel right after the first member if that one's free, otherwise the highest free one.
- Brings the New York sound back on a free USB input and makes that desk channel play it.
- Sets the channel up like its first member (below) and puts it on the USER 1 layer.
The message says where it went: Vox Lead NY is on CH 14 of the Wing - bring its fader up. The fader isn't touched, so it starts wherever the free channel's fader was - push it up to taste.
How the desk channel is set up#
| Name | The channel's name + NY (Vox Lead NY); for a group Drums NY, or the first member's name + how many more (Tom 1 +2 NY) |
| Colour, icon | The first member's colour and icon |
| Main sends | Copied from the first member |
| Bus sends | Only to buses that feed the mains (subgroups) - the New York sound has to take the same way as the dry sound, or it arrives at another time. Monitor and FX buses get nothing |
| DCA and mute groups | The same as the first member: muting the group mutes its New York too |
| Mute | Unmuted - or muted if the desk is on DIRECT at that moment |
The USER 1 layer#
The channel is also placed on the centre section's USER 1 layer, in the first free place of its 16. Nothing already there is moved. If the layer is full, a notice USER 1 is full says so - free a place on the desk and it's added the next time Shadow Rack connects. If you remove it from the layer yourself, it stays removed until the next connection.
Mixing it#
The desk fader is the amount of New York. In Shadow Rack the bus's return card says Its own fader on the Wing - sets how much New York is added. A single-channel New York has no send level in Shadow Rack, the fader does it; a group bus keeps the send per member, so you set the balance of the drums into it in Shadow Rack and the total on the desk.
- Mute a member on the desk and its New York copy goes quiet too (a whole Vox NY, or just that drum's part of Drums NY), with a short fade. See desk sync.
- On DIRECT the safety switch mutes every New York desk channel: the members then play straight from their sources, earlier than the New York sound still coming through the Mac, and the two would comb-filter. Back on THROUGH RACK they unmute - except the ones you had muted yourself before.
- In the routing view a New York channel's card shows NEW YORK (SHADOW RACK) in yellow.
When it's not possible#
| Message | Why |
|---|---|
| ... isn't on the rack - put it through Shadow Rack first (Wing routing > RACK). | A member couldn't be put on the rack |
| No free channel on the Wing: every one of the 40 has a source or a name. | Free a channel on the desk: source OFF, name empty |
| There's no free USB input on the Wing to bring the New York sound back. | Free a USB input on the desk |
| The Wing isn't connected (the WING display on the top bar). | No network link to the desk |
| ... is only in the Mac - there's no Wing channel for New York to follow. | A Mac only channel has no desk strip to copy |
| CH 13 has no source on the Wing - nothing to send. | The member has no source on the desk |
| Shadow Rack isn't using the Wing's USB audio. Pick WING in Setup > Audio first. | Another interface is chosen |
Shadow Rack only takes a channel that is really free, so it never lands on one of yours.
Deleting it, or taking the channel back#
- Delete the New York bus in Shadow Rack and the desk channel is freed again: source OFF, name cleared, off USER 1 - but only if it still plays from USB.
- Patch something else onto that desk channel and Shadow Rack leaves it to you. It says so with a notice, New York: CH 14 is used on the Wing: the New York sound has nowhere to play until you set that channel back to its USB input on the desk, or make the New York bus again.
