Glossary
The labels and words that only exist in Shadow Rack - what they mean and where to read more.
Insert, bypass or buffer mean the same here as on any desk. Below are only the words and labels that are specific to Shadow Rack and might not be obvious at first.
The rack#
- On the rack – that's how we say a channel plays through Shadow Rack.
- BYPASS ALL – the panic button on the top bar (⌘⇧B). Every channel plays without its plugins at once, still in time.
- New York – parallel compression on a bus of its own, like VOX NY or DRUMS NY. Channels send a copy to it, and you bring it up on a desk fader (New York buses).
- NY SEND – a yellow marker in the chain. It shows where the New York copy is taken; with AUTO ON it sits before the first reverb or delay.
- SOF – Sends On Fader. Click SOF on a New York bus and the mixer's faders show the sends to that bus.
- Keep in time with the PA – tick it on the channels that feed the speakers, and Shadow Rack keeps them in time even when one of them has a lookahead plugin (latency).
- SPEECH – for the talk between songs: one button bypasses every reverb and delay and switches off the New York sends. Press it again and everything is back as it was.
- My plugins – your plugin list. They're the only ones you see when you add a plugin to a channel (Setup > Plugins).
- MISSING – a plugin in the session isn't on this Mac or won't open. Its settings stay in the session, so nothing is lost.
- SWITCHED OFF – the plugin caused a crash and stays off until you switch it back on (crash safety).
- BAD AUDIO – the plugin started sending broken audio and was muted before anything reached the PA.
- Knob strip – the four knobs under a plugin. With LEARN you set what they do on that plugin (MIDI controllers).
- FX / IEM layer – the switch on the top bar: the rack or the in-ears.
- MAC and LOOP – the two numbers in LATENCY. MAC is exactly what the Mac adds; LOOP is the measured trip from the desk through the Mac and back.
In-ears since 0.4#
- Musician – one person's mix, with its own output pair and its own phone link (musicians).
- Source – anything a musician can have in their mix: a rack channel, an extra interface input like a click or talkback, or a test file (sources).
- 3D / STEREO / MONO – how a musician hears their mix: the band around the head, plain left-right, or the same in both ears. space on the MIX page compares them quickly.
- ROOM – a touch of space around the mix, so the band sounds around the head, not inside it. 3D only.
- POST / RAW – a rack channel in the in-ears after its plugins (POST) or straight from the interface (RAW). The in-ears switch to RAW by themselves if the rack is late or gone (the in-ear engine).
- In-ear engine – a separate program that makes the in-ear mixes and keeps playing even if Shadow Rack crashes.
Licence and versions since 0.5#
